From the diaspora — for the diaspora

The Unwritten Rules

What auntie tells nephew. What cousin tells cousin. What you won't find on Google.

The 2026 mood

After the 2022 semifinal run, Americans now know "Morocco" isn't "Monaco" or "Mecca." We're recognizable. That's a gift. Wear the kit with pride — but don't be the loud guy in the parking lot who becomes a viral video. Every Moroccan in a kit is a representative of l'bled in 2026. The eyes are on us.

The world saw the joy in 2022. It also saw what happened in Brussels after the Spain match. Be the joy. Not the other thing.

What to wear

  • Red is the home kit. The unspoken dress code at every Atlas Lions tailgate is red — even if you don't have the jersey, wear red.
  • Atlas Lions scarf > jersey for older men who don't want to look like teenagers. The flag scarf reads dignified.
  • Friday Jumu'ah on Jun 19 (Scotland match) — bring a clean change. The masjid won't appreciate a sweat-soaked jersey from the morning tailgate. Pack a djellaba or clean shirt in a separate bag.
  • Your mother's evil eye / khamsa: yes, wear it. The grandmas in Paterson notice these things.
  • Hijab in stadiums: FIFA explicitly allows it. If a security person challenges it, ask politely for a supervisor — don't argue. Document quietly.

What to bring (and what to leave at home)

  • Power bank. Your phone is your ticket, your map, your translator, and your camera. Dead battery = locked out of the stadium. This is non-negotiable.
  • Stadium bag policy: ONE clear plastic/vinyl bag, max 12"×6"×12" + ONE small clutch max 4.5"×6.5". No opaque bags, no backpacks. Pack the night before.
  • Flags WITHOUT poles are allowed. Hand-held only. Big draped flags / banners need pre-registration through FIFA's Fan Materials platform.
  • Drums / darbouka: Solo guy with a drum = likely confiscated. Supporter group must register in advance.
  • Vuvuzelas: BANNED. Don't even try.
  • Empty water bottle: allowed; refill inside. Critical in Atlanta heat.

Tailgate culture

Families:

  • Arrive 3-4h early. Halal grill. Tagine in coolers. Kids in mini-jerseys.
  • Women in scarves with flag colors. Music from the trunk (Stati, Saad Lamjarred).
  • Polaroid camera. Henna for the kids. Photo with the flag.

Young men cohort (chabab):

  • Drums, dabke-into-North-African chants. Bigger draped flags.
  • "Dima Maghrib" + "Sir Sir" + Hakimi olé.
  • NO open flames. NO glass. NO smoke flares (FIFA banned, security will fine).

Mixed elders:

  • Sit in chairs. Drink mint tea — yes, in the parking lot, in tea glasses.
  • Greet everyone with "Salam, kifash?" and ask where their family is from in Morocco within 30 seconds of meeting.

Driving and routing the locals know

  • Paterson → MetLife on Route 3: leave 4h before kickoff or you're not making it.
  • Don't take the Lincoln Tunnel on a match day — Holland or GWB.
  • Boston → Foxborough: take I-95, not Route 1. Or use the MBTA Stadium Train and avoid driving entirely.
  • Atlanta: the Connector merge at Peachtree Street is the choke point — exit at North Ave and take surface streets, or just take MARTA from Five Points (25 min from ATL airport for $2.50).
  • Where rideshare drivers actually pick up after a match: NOT at the stadium gate (mobbed). Walk 5 minutes away to a quieter side street and re-summon. Saves 30+ minutes.

Police, US laws, and surviving small interactions

  • Don't argue with NYPD even when you're right. The courtroom is the place to win, not the curb. Submit fast, complain later.
  • Hands visible, no sudden moves, "Yes officer, no officer." If you don't speak much English, say it clearly. If detained, ask for a lawyer — that's it.
  • DUI = zero tolerance. 0.08% BAC = arrest, jail, $5k+ fines, possible visa revocation. Non-alcoholic Heineken at watch parties is often near the alcoholic ones — read the can.
  • Public urination, drunkenness, vandalism: $250-$1000 fines. After the match, don't pee on Route 3.
  • Subway fare evasion in NYC: $100+ fine. ICE can be notified. Pay the $2.90.
  • Cannabis is legal recreationally in NJ, NY, MA but illegal federally — do not bring across state lines, do not fly with it, do not consume if on a non-immigrant visa (deportable offense even where state-legal).
  • Guns: in NJ/NY (concealed) and GA (open carry), strangers may be armed. De-escalate. Don't argue with strangers in parking lots.

Tipping (works very differently here)

Tipping is customary in the US — not legally required, but widely expected at sit-down service. Here are the typical ranges so you know what's normal and can decide what feels right:

  • Sit-down restaurants: 18-20% pre-tax is typical. Fine dining 20-25%.
  • Counter / coffee: $1-2 in the tip jar if you'd like.
  • Taxi / Uber / Lyft: 15-20% is common, or a couple of dollars (in the app).
  • Hotel housekeeping: $2-5 per night, left on the pillow each morning. Different staff each day, so daily works better than a lump at checkout.
  • Bellhop: $1-2 per bag. Concierge: $5-20 for a real favor.
  • Why it matters: in many US states, restaurant servers earn below minimum wage by law — tips make up the rest of their pay.
  • Watch for "service included" / "gratuity" on a bill (groups, hotel restaurants) — no need to add on top.

Customs and what NOT to bring from Morocco

  • Prohibited: all meats and meat products (yes, including khlea and merguez). Fresh/dried/frozen fruits and vegetables. Home-canned goods. Date palm fronds.
  • Generally OK: argan oil, commercially packaged dates (declared!), sealed olives, spices including ras el hanout, commercially canned products, coffee, tea.
  • Always declare — failing to declare = up to $1,000 first-offense fine.
  • Tell the aunties: Moroccan grandmas trying to smuggle homemade msemen will get them confiscated and the whole bag torn apart. Save the heartbreak.

The "after-the-match" code

  • Where to go after Morocco wins ≠ where to go if Morocco loses. Different vibes, different lists.
  • Don't drive home immediately after a win. You'll be screaming, and you'll get pulled over for the slightest thing. Cool down 30 minutes. Take MARTA / NJ Transit / MBTA.
  • Friday Jumu'ah after the Brazil match: have a clean shirt + djellaba ready in a separate bag — the masjid won't appreciate the post-tailgate jersey + sweat.
